うほ、先日話した「原虫」を買ってしまいました。
127音色×4＝16MBの拡張SIMMメモリです。こんなのに2万近く金かけてよかったのか悩んだのですが、今となっては良かったです。今は、PCで処理をするソフトウェア音源が全盛ですが、PCの性能に依存しないハードウェアシンセなので、別な事にパソコンを使ってる時でも演奏できるというのが良いです。
また、個人的に欲しかった第2世代PCM音源（KORGM1時代）の音色がたくさん入ってました。
さっそくE-mu B-3を分解。なかなか素敵な構造です。
PCのメモリを増設するみたいに差込口に挿せば終了。
ただし、SIMMのメモリ増設って生まれて初めての体験でした。
初めてPC自作したのが、DIMMになってからなんで・・・。
でも、確かその頃もSIMMメモリって出回ってて、つけ方だけは聞いたことありました。
たしか斜めに倒してから垂直に立てるとパチっとハマるんですよね。
うほほ、「B-3」32MBと「原虫」16MBの図。大容量（?）48MBって・・・。
■「原虫」ROMとはなんぞや
2年ほど前に生産中止になったE-muの最後のハード音源、Proteus2000系シリーズ
の拡張ROM「Protozoa」（16MB 定価39800円）で、さらに前の世代に出たProteus1/2/3
の3台分の音色が全部入ってる。
1988年に発売されたProteusという音源は当時では破格の大容量だった4MBの
音色を搭載したシンセで、当時では信じられないほどのリアルな音で人々を驚かせたそうですが、
さすがに今では、うわ！古そうな音！ってな荒削りな音です。
同じ1988年に出たドラクエ3があの壮大なゲーム全体で2MBitしか使われてなかったぐらいなので、
4MByteに音のサンプルだけが入ってるというのは、信じられない容量だった事がわかります。
さすが16bit 40KHzモノラル。さらに、抜けの悪いこもった音で、
サンプリング時間が短い音色が目白押しです。なんといっても、スーパーファミコンが
開発されていた時代のシンセですからね。でも、音の質感はスーパーファミコンとは
比べ物になりません。（スーパーファミコンのソフトに入ってた音色は、
様々な音色が入って大体200KB程度。でも、音色は本体ではなく、カセットのROMに入ってたようです。）
しかも、昔の容量の少ない音源に共通して言える、音の薄っぺらさがまったくありません。
逆に最近の本物すぎる音色より、わざとらしさが出ててとっても良いぐらいです。
