ボクの音楽プレイヤー（連載1回目）

なんだかんだでメモリ型音楽プレイヤーを使い続けて、いつの間にか7年も経ってました。
もしかしたら、音楽プレイヤーを買う際の今後の参考になるかもしれないので、1機種ずつ思い出話をつらつらと書いていこうとおもいます。
そうなると5回以上の連載ですか。

初めてメモリ型音楽プレイヤーなるものが発売されたのが、1998年の「mpman」で、32MBでした。まだ電脳(アキバ)系の人が買う高いオモチャ扱いでしたが。

[デメリット]
①　32MBだと30分ぐらいしか曲が入らなかった。
②　電池の寿命も短かった。
③　大きさもMDと大して変わらなかった。
④　その割に値段が高かった。3万とか。
⑤　作りが貧弱。どう見ても原価3000円ぐらい。
⑥　得体の知れないメーカーが多い。

[メリット]
①　ICチップのメモリ型なので、可動部分が無いから音飛びしない。
②　理論的にはMDより小さい機種もできる。（その後腕時計型が発売される）

という感じですかね。私もおもちゃ程度としか見てませんでした。
その頃の流行はMDで、私も負けずに高校の頃にMDプレイヤーを買いましたよ。
「コレの一型前」
99年にソニーかどこかが80分MDを発売、まだ主流は74分のMDでしたが、編集できるし、トラック別に分けられる強みを生かしてMD絶頂期にありました。

そんな時、大学に入って原付で通学する時になって問題発生。
高校時代はチャリンコだったので、何ともなかったのですが、MDで音楽を聴いていると、揺れでほとんど音が飛んでしまうのです。45分の通学時間の間に10分ぐらいしか音楽が流れない。その後、数ヶ月でMDプレイヤーが壊れてしまいました。

そこで音飛びのしない機器が欲しい！ということで、メモリー型音楽プレイヤーを見つけたのがキッカケでした。
それでも、32MBは少なすぎる。64MBぐらいは欲しいぞと待っていたら、さっそく発売されました。

その発売された初代携帯音楽プレイヤーは、

「Rio 500」「別な記事」
(リンク先は、Internet WatchとかPC Watch)
でした。

本体が34800円、拡張用のスマートメモリ32MBが約8000円。
半月分のバイト代が吹き飛びました。

性能面では、当時メモリが32MBの製品ばかりだったので、本体に64MB内蔵してるのだけでも良いのに、拡張で32MBのスマートメモリーを搭載すれば、96MBのメモリが使用できました。
これでやっと1時間半（MDと同等）聴けるようになった！ということで存分に活躍してくれました。
この96MBを上回る携帯型音楽プレイヤーが発売されるのは、3年ぐらい先の事です。
不安定なWin98のUSB転送でしたけど、MDと比べて格段に編集しやすくなりましたしね。
あと、フォルダ分けもできましたし、使い勝手は今のメモリー型プレイヤーと大して変わりません。

ただし、Rio500のモノとしての評価は、やっぱりオモチャの域を脱してなかったように思えます。

全体がプラスチックですし、電池カバーの蓋が弱くて電池がすぐに飛び出してくるとか、今ではあまり見かけなくなった「電池を引っこ抜く時に引っ張るヒモ」がついてたり・・・。でも、貧弱な外見とは裏腹に、2002年冬まで1度の修理で持ちこたえました。
1度の修理は電池まわりでしたね。単三電池1本が入るのに、なぜか電池を入れる所はそれ以上の大きさなので、たまに接触不良になるんです。
そのほか、他サイトを見るとジョグダイヤルの消耗が激しかったそうですが、私は問題なかったです。ダイヤルは、あまり使わなかったというのもあるかもしれませんが。
その後、このRio500は親戚にあげてしまいましたが、まだ修理せずに現役で使っているそうです。

サポートについては、株式会社ダイアモンド・マルチメディア・システムズ(すでに滅亡)という、外国にあるRioを作る会社の日本支社みたいなところで、相当小さい会社だったらしく、その後のサポートがポンポン変わった記憶があります。やっぱりこういうキワモノ系って大手メーカーはいきなり冒険しませんしね・・。小さい会社になっちゃう。
ただし、アメリカのサポートはしっかりしてたように思えます。UPDATEのパッチ等は頻繁に出していて、日本語対応や64MBスマートメモリーに対応したりとがんばってくれました。とさ・・。
