１回目がずいぶん長文になってしまったので、できるだけ短く書こうと思います。
2002年夏、以前からずっと使ってきたRio500は相変わらず好調なものの、約1時間半しか曲が入らないという点は非常に困っていた。
なぜなら仕事の都合上、出張などで5日以上PCとは無縁の生活を送ることすらあったからだ。
そうなった場合は、1時間半の音楽を帰宅まで聞き続けなければならない。
要はもっとメモリの多い機種が欲しくなったわけだ。
すでにこの頃は、あちこちのメーカーから似たような携帯音楽プレイヤーが発売されていて、メモリの量も64～128MB内蔵で、拡張があったとしたら最大128MBのスマートメディアとかのモノがメインでした。
この時期に発売された機種のウリは、
「MDより小さくて電池の寿命が長い」
「デザインがオモチャっぽくない」
「なんかマイクもついていてボイスレコーダーのような録音もできちゃう」
という感じでしょうか。
やっと普及し始めてきて、プラスチックのスケルトンみたいな安っぽいのではない、ｍしっかりした作りのプレイヤーが増えてきました。
そこで、狙いをつけたのが！
内蔵メモリが128MB、拡張で128MBのスマートメディアが入ります。ということで、96MBからいきなり256MBに。その時に使ってたワタクシのノートPCのメインメモリが256MBだったので、いかにすごい容量だったかがわかるかと思います。音楽も4時間ぐらい入るようになりましたし。
外見はほとんどがプラスチックながら表側は金属です。かなりMDプレイヤーを意識したつくり。
大きさもRio500よりわずかながら小さくなってました。
あいかわらず、機能面は優秀でスリープタイマー、日本語表示、音量表示、ランダムプレイやらも対応していて、録音もパッチリ。
ボタン類の配置も綺麗にまとまっていて、ポケットに手を突っ込んだだけでわかりました。
さらに電池も単三電池1本で18時間も持つ優秀性。（Rio500がカタログでは14時間だったような。実際は10時間ぐらい。）
これは使える！と思ったのですが・・・。
やはりありました。弱点。
それは、電源ONのボタンが再生ボタンと兼ねていて、再生ボタンを長押しでONになる仕組みでした。
間違って何かの拍子に電源がONになっていることもしばしば。
なので、常にボタンHOLDを切り替えてやる必要がありました。
あと、中のプログラムにバグがあったようで、使ってるだけでこのプレイヤー自体のプログラムが壊れて再起不能になった記憶があります。もしや基盤が悪かったのかな？
さらに一番の問題点は、ADTECは韓国のメーカーで日本にもサポート受け口があったのですが、どんなに些細な故障でも、いちいち韓国に持っていって修理だそうです。なので、もし壊れていなくても絶対に1万円以上取られた気がします。
1度故障した時は保証期間内だったのでタダで新品と交換できたのですが、2回目にぶっこわれた時はいくらかかるのかわからないので、放置。約1年の寿命でした。
使いやすかったものの、店頭では見えない部分（サポート体制やらプログラム）がダメだったプレイヤーでした。
